PERFORMED AT SHOWCALL SHOWCASE:
"Hailing from the same town as
Tom Jones, Pontypridd, Phil Steed makes
no attempt to disguise his admiration for
the star. Steed matches him for voice and
energy, this short set finishing with a
massively well delivered Thunderball."
PETER HEPPLE - THE STAGE
Thomas Woodward went around the same South
Wales Clubs as a very young Phil Steed before
he made it, and Phil met up with Tom several
times on the South Wales Working Mens' Club
Circuit. On one occasion Tom got up to give
a song with Phil's group, The Senatones
who at the same time used to get mixed up
with Tom's group, The Senators.
From the same home town as Tom, Phil captures
'The Tom Jones Experience' as only a fellow
Welshman can, featuring as big and powerful
voice as the man himself.
Phil has sung all over the world with his
tribute show, bringing the house down always.
Although not purporting to be an absolute
clone of Tom (which is a silly notion some
people have about tribute acts) what you
get is the best 'Tom Jones Tribute Act'
on the market with regard to the voice and
atmosphere created.
As Tom himself said in his autobiography,
"You had to be a really good singer
to get paid in Wales because there were
so many good singers around who would sing
for a pint of beer", as Tom himself
did before being asked to stand in one night
for the Senators lead singer who was tied
up playing cards in a local club. Tom said
yes as long as they would supply a crate
of beer for the dressing room of the local
YMCA. After all, Friday night in Wales is
beer night.
He struggled with the rest of us for a few
years before Gordon Mills was asked to go
and see him in a local club. Gordon eventually
let him record 'It's not Unusual', which
he'd written for Sandy Shaw. The rest is
history...
